Change password

Hi Nina! This page is where you change your own sign-in password.

What this is

The Change password page lets you swap the password you use to sign in to the CMS for a new one. It only ever changes your own password — not anyone else's.

You'll usually come here in one of two situations:

  • You want a fresh password. Maybe it's been a while, or you think someone might know it.
  • An admin gave you a temporary one. If a colleague set up your account or reset your password, the CMS asks you to pick your own the next time you sign in. In that case the page is titled Set a new password and the first box is labelled Temporary password.

How to open it

  1. Sign in to the CMS admin.
  2. Open the Change password page from the menu.
  3. If you were given a temporary password, the CMS brings you here automatically and won't let you continue until you set a new one.

What you can do here

Change your own password

  1. In the first box, type your current password — or the temporary password an admin gave you, if that's how you got here.
  2. In New password, type the password you want from now on. It must be at least 8 characters.
  3. In Confirm new password, type the exact same new password again.
  4. Click Update password.
  5. If everything matches, you're signed straight through to the CMS with your new password in place.

Pick something strong

Longer is stronger. A short phrase you'll remember but others can't guess works well. The only hard rule the CMS enforces is a minimum of 8 characters, and that your new password must be different from your current one.

Every field explained

What you see What it means
Current password Your existing password, to prove it's really you.
Temporary password The same first box, but named this way when an admin gave you a one-time password to get started.
New password (≥8 chars) The password you want to use from now on. Must be at least 8 characters.
Confirm new password Type the new password a second time, so a typo can't lock you out.
Update password Saves the change and signs you through with the new password.

Common mistakes

Watch out for these

  • The two new-password boxes don't match. If New password and Confirm new password aren't identical, the CMS shows "New password and confirmation don't match" and nothing changes. Retype them carefully.
  • A password shorter than 8 characters. The CMS won't accept it and will remind you of the minimum length.
  • The current password is wrong. If the first box doesn't match your real current (or temporary) password, you'll see "The current password you entered is incorrect." Double-check and try again.
  • Reusing your old password. Your new password has to be different from your current one. If it's the same, the CMS asks you to choose a different one.
  • Trying to change someone else's password here. This page only changes your own. To help another admin, use the Users page instead.
